Planking- 1st Bottom & Sides
My digital camera was on the fritz, so the battens are already
fitted, bottom planking on, and the side planking progressing. There
really isn't that much waste so far-- I was able to use 2-full-sized sheets from
the transom forward before switching to 18" wide pieces, then to 6" strips.
Bottom was very uneventful and was easy and straightforward.
The keel is wide enough that there is ample fastening space to
ensure a good fit along the center line and I must have faired it adequately as
it joins together straight and look good "by eye".
Still deciding on the outer layer-- on the bottom will
probably do plywood up to 8' towards stem, then switch to home-cut veneer.
Most others seem to suggest a thin-kerf table saw blade-- but I have a better
band saw than a table saw and a new planer-- so I will try to use the bandsaw to
"resaw" and plain flat. I would like to use 4" widths to better simulate
plank construction and 4" widths on my cheap table saw might be difficult.
Have plenty of time to try some samples.

First Bottom & both sides complete. Still have to sand & shape sheer top. |

Top view-- hope center seam looks straight. |

Other side. They are "similar", but in a few places a little less than "exact" |

Other side showing progression to to the stern from bow. Am using 6" rips that are 32" long. They really fit together pretty well and am not needing to trim the sides to make flush. Maybe on the second layer when I have a greater diagonal. |

Things coming together, the bow is "drying." Wanted to wait for everything to set up before attaching the "last" piece. Not using epoxy takes more time here-- as my adhesive takes about a week to really set-up so I can remove the screws and sand. I think it will be better for it, but who knows. At least using a caulk-based adhesive fills gaps better than epoxy-- I know I am getting full contact to the battens, sheer, and chine. |

Coming together at the bow. This is really one of the difficult things about building your own boat-- you really don't know if it is "faired" enough, if this should look this way or that, but at least I am making sure that both sides look as close to the same as I can. Thinking that the first lamination sets the shape and the 2nd will be easier. |

That's adhesive, not uneven seams. |
